RISE IN THE USAGE OF GEOSPATIAL INTELLIGENCE

Within the defence organizations worldwide, there have been several convergences of imaging and geospatial communities in the past few decades. NIMA (National Imagery and Mapping Agency), presently known as NGA (National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency), has been founded on such principles. The military transformations have been highly dependent on a commonly shared understanding and co-operation toward mutual development and cost reduction. Furthermore, the terrain and weather information should also be founded on universal analytics and must employ collective representation and predictable tools. Usage of geospatial intelligence has been ever increasing, owing to the increasing need for information superiority to support the decision cycle. The decision-makers require an ever-increasing level of detailed knowledge regarding the area of conflict, awareness of the terrain, and geography.

THE INCREASING NEED FOR SHORT-MISSION CYCLE TIME

Short mission cycle times implies that the information is present with adequate quality to reduce the ambiguity and therefore, enable a quick decision-making process. Short mission cycle times suggest that the appropriate systems are present to detect and identify the events on time and also ensure the real-time implementation of the decisions. Perishability of information, on which the decisions are based, is one of the critical aspects of the need for short mission cycle times. Information obtained previously, have the chance of getting wasted. Thus the efforts put into obtaining the information are hampered. Short mission cycle times help to keep the data accurate and aids in the decisions to be taken. Another critical aspect of the need for short mission cycle times is the time required for information dissemination and for making decisions across the force via the C4ISR system-of-systems, which ensure both coordination and collaboration. Reducing the mission cycle times leads to an increase in the number of opportunities to engage the enemy. The decision-makers require that the information reaches a minimum acceptable quality level before they accept the accountability of any decision. Precise and complete data, as well as the effectiveness of the display of information, will play a huge role in the time taken for decision making. Thus, less ambiguous data, which is more quickly acquired, will lead to shortening the time needed for decision-making.

DEFENSE BUDGET CUTS IN THE DEVELOPED COUNTRIES

The defence budget cuts have led the Russian defence ministry to protect procurement ambitions from the impact of the country's shrinking economy. Although the Russian economy has been stable, the government is committed to fiscal tightening. The military expenditures for Russia have been estimated to fall in 2017 and 2018, while a rise is expected in 2019. The collapse in the barrel price of oil, combined with western economic sanctions and the need to substitute a range of sub-systems and components, previously sourced from Ukraine, have placed the defence expenditure under pressure. While the defence spending is to be reduced, the defence ministry is attempting to safeguard the procurement investment. Presently, the ministry shall impose larger cuts in the defence spending to protect the supply.

RISK OF CYBER ATTACKS

The C4ISR systems are sophisticated equipment and require significant expertise in their construction. Currently, the command, control, communication, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) systems play a fundamental role in military operations. Modern C4ISR nodes currently process enormous quantities of digital data in real time, thus allowing all levels of command to control the battle space better. In the future, more sophisticated electronics are expected to be used to acquire, process, and distribute information on manned and unmanned platforms and systems. The leaders of the US Department of Defence have plans to increase their expenditure on cybersecurity in the future. The expected increase in cyber expenditure represents at least the second consecutive increase for cyber operations. The increase in cyber threats to the C4ISR systems is another major hindrance, which is damaging the defence sector, as a result of the risk of loss or theft of confidential military data.

February, 2017: BAE Systems have announced the completion of their acquisition of IAP research, an engineering company focused on the development of the electromagnetic launchers.

August 2017: CACI have announced that they have been awarded a USD 10 million contract from the Navy in order to provide C4ISR support. CACI's integrated security solutions team shall support the Naval Air Warfare center Aircrafts Divisions Special Communications Missions Solutions Divisions.

June 2017: Elbit Systems receives USD 11 million contract providing integrated maritime system to Asia-Pacific navy.
