This IDC Perspective analyzes the role of governments, in particular national governments, as intelligent buyers of AI. Beyond the potential value of AI to increase operational efficiency and public service responsiveness and personalization across these functions and missions, national governments consider AI to be a strategic asset for their countries. From an industrial strategy perspective, national governments want to promote the growth of the national AI innovation ecosystem and ensure the sovereignty of their AI supply chains.
