This IDC study examines the market share of virtual machine software vendors in 2023 as well as the market forces that influenced their performances. Virtual machine software is a submarket of the software-defined compute (SDC) software functional market. Virtual machine software includes hypervisor revenue derived from traditional, noncloud server virtualization deployments and does not include hypervisor revenue that is bundled with cloud system software for cloud deployments.According to Gary Chen, research director, Software-Defined Compute at IDC, "While traditional noncloud virtualization is steadily being modernized into cloud system software and containers, that is a long journey, and virtual machine software will be an essential system for enterprises for a very long time."
