人口増加による食糧不足に対応するため、農作物の収穫量を増やすことは比較的重要となっています。これは、作物の耐病性や耐乾燥性を向上させたバイオテクノロジーのおかげで実現可能になっています。植物にさまざまな病気に対する免疫をつけるために、科学者は特定の病気抵抗性遺伝子を選び、植物のDNAに注入します。例えば、コーネル大学とハワイ大学が共同で、パパイヤリングスポットウイルスに耐性を持つ2種類のパパイヤ種子を開発し、多くのフィールド実験を経て1998年に市販されました。また、乾燥地帯で栽培される作物には、乾燥に対する耐性が強く求められます。
