EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

The key forces dominating market trends for Stationary Point-of-Sale (SPOS) scanners are self-checkout, e-commerce, supply-side product development cycles from vendors, and the macroeconomic outlook for the retail industry. The following are the major trends in these forces:

  • Self-checkout: SCO unit shipments dropped to set the 4% pace of growth in the past year.
  • E-commerce: Unlike the pandemic years when retailers found it imperative to invest in e-commerce infrastructure, businesses today are uncertain about whether new equipment should support online or in-store shopping. Demand-side deliberation is causing a short-term holdup in SPOS investments.
  • Vendor developments: Datalogic, Zebra, and Honeywell have all made significant product introductions in 2023, and NCR announced its split into two independent, publicly traded companies - NCR Voyix (retail, hospitality, and digital banking) and NCR Atleos (ATM). VDC expects these new product introductions to drive growth in 2024.
  • Retail Store Trends: Overall retailers are opening more stores than they are closing. In the US that ratio is estimated at 3:1. However, store formats are evolving with greater demand for smaller footprint physical locations.

KEY FINDINGS:

Retail Infrastructures are Evolving: Many retailers were forced to create multiple e-commerce fulfillment strategies during COVID, including, but not limited to - BOPIS, BOSFS, quick commerce, and curbside delivery - or risk going out of business. In 2023, many retailers are learning that some fulfillment formats are less- or non-profitable and create problems with returns. Operational efficiencies and loss prevention are key focus areas for businesses now.

VDC's primary research shows that investment in e-commerce channels is not going away but has slowed. Infrastructure investment has slowed while retailers optimize their processes and redeploy resources instead of buying more, factoring into VDC's projections for contraction in 2023. Self-checkout is gaining in popularity beyond the grocery segment and is drawing shoppers back into stores.

Self-Checkout Is Expanding: Self-checkout solutions are expanding beyond large-scale grocery stores into new store formats, including convenience stores, pharmacies and smaller grocers. This is influencing solution footprint and scanner technology requirements among others. Large-format grocers still demand bioptics with integrated weighing for fresh foods, but mini-slots with scales are suitable for smaller grocers. Furthermore, single-plane and presentation-based SCO are becoming more common in nongrocery retail segments. Drug stores, convenience mini-marts, mall pop-ups, specialty stores, and more are deploying smaller, more affordable SCO units. In a specialty retail development, Amazon launched two "just walk out" setups for apparel only, using RFID with payment terminals for self-checkout at high volume sports venues. In sum, VDC expects new SCO formats in the coming years.

At the same time, bioptic models from NCR, Datalogic, and Zebra feature high-resolution cameras with RGB sensors and artificial intelligence, which accelerate checkout, reduce loss, and simplify and speed up the shopper experience, and facilitate personalized interactions with customers.

Artificial Intelligence Is Becoming More Intelligent: The main use case for AI at the POS has long been produce recognition, which did not perform well enough - for example, systems could not distinguish between conventional and organic fruits and vegetables. VDC's 2023 research demonstrates the potential for AI to support much more. For example, AI-enabled POS systems are able to read expiration dates and automatically discount prices for perishable items, as well as drive stocking and inventory replenishment. As a more advanced use case, NCR is testing AI to make personalized offers to shoppers in line and at the checkout. These and other AI opportunities are increasingly being made possible today, although not widely deployed. Many of these opportunities will also hinge upon greater adoption and use of 2D barcodes throughout retail supply chains.

GS1 Sunrise 2027 Will & Already Does Drive Retail: Sunrise 2027, part of GS1's "Global Migration to 2D" (GM2D), is an initiative to transition to 2D barcodes at the point-of-sale by the end of 2027. While the first phase of this initiative is expected to see both 1D and 2D codes printed on packaging, manufacturers will have the option to replace traditional linear barcodes entirely after 2027. GS1 announced its biggest pilot in China's Zhejiang province, where 364,000 brands have adopted 2D barcodes on over 12 million products, with over 2,500 stores scanning 2D codes at the checkout - becoming the world's first GM2D demonstration setup.

One of the benefits that retailers are looking to leverage through this undertaking is that by adding 2D codes on products, store associates can scan shelves rather than reading labels to check product expiration dates. Woolworths reports that it saves enough from this single use case to cover all associated costs. VDC expects compliance with Sunrise 2027 to strengthen SPOS scanners' stature as a critical technology driving the efficiency of retail.
