The global surgical gowns market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.16% over the forecast period to reach US$1,090.617 million by 2027 from US$904.798 million in 2021. Surgical gowns are protective equipment used by medical and healthcare professionals during surgical procedures to prevent microbial transmission between them and the patient that could affect their health. The gowns are made from fabrics such as cotton, and woven polyester among others that provide a greater comfort level and can also be custom designed. Rapid developments in the medical care sector, growing establishments of hospitals & healthcare facilities, an increase in the number of surgeries coupled with innovation in medical protective gear, and a rapidly growing old age population are the major factors that are boosting the market demand for surgical gowns, thereby, propelling their market growth. For instance, in August 2019, the Government of India announced the establishment of 22 new AIIMS hospitals in different parts of the country. Furthermore, according to the data provided by the US Burau of Labor Statistics, in Q3 of 2019, hospital establishments in the US stood at a total of 13,944. With such growing establishments the demand for medical equipment and kits including surgical gowns has also increased, thereby stimulating the market growth of the surgical gowns market.

Based on gown type, the global surgical gowns market is segmented into surgical isolation gowns, non-reinforced gowns, reinforced gowns, and others. The surgical isolation gowns are expected to grow at a relatively higher rate during the forecast period of the global surgical gowns market. Surgical isolation gowns have high applicability in surgical procedures in which the risk of contamination ranges from medium to high. With the increase in the old age population, the scale of surgical procedures has also increased which is expected to create more demand for surgical gowns such as isolation gowns is also expected to increase.

The rapid increase in the number of surgical procedures in countries is expected to increase the demand and consumption of surgical gowns. Surgical gowns create a barrier between the medical professional and the patient, thereby preventing them from contamination and unwanted infections. Over the years the number of surgical procedures relating to different medical fields has witnessed a significant increase owing to the growing improper nutritional intake, and sedentary lifestyle which has increased the rate of various health issues in the people, which require surgical treatment. For instance, according to Eurostat, in 2020, Cataract surgery was conducted on 3.66 million people across the European Union countries, Belgium, Malta, Cyprus, and Greece showed a significant increase from the last year of 1.22 million surgical procedures. Furthermore, according to the 2021-2022 Annual Report of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, from January to September 2021, the number of ears, nose, and throat surgeries in India stood at 15,374, which showed an increase of 54.5% surgical procedures for eyes, nose, and throat in comparison to 2020 for the corresponding period. With such an increase in the number of surgical procedures, the demand and consumption of surgical gowns are also projected to increase, thereby positively impacting the market growth of the global surgical gowns market during the forecast period.

However, surgical gowns to be used in various medical and surgical procedures must fulfill certain requirements. For instance, the Recognized Consensus Standards laid down by FDA consist of sterility standards and biocompatibility standards which the makers of surgical gowns are required to meet. Similar guidelines have been laid by European Union's European Committee for Standardization. Such guidelines and standards can create obstacles in the market growth of the global surgical gowns market.

Recent developments:

In March 2022, launched a new series of surgical gowns namely "V90 Surgical Gowns", which is soft knit, incorporates sonic welding throughout, and consists of a loop hook that enables full body coverage and is adjustable. The new surgical gown series is designed to cater to the dynamic healthcare needs in today's environment.

Winner Medical Co. Ltd, in December 2020, announced the launch of its "Cotton Three Resistance Barrier Series-Winner Jiahu Surgical Gown", which has eco-friendly nature, offers high performance during surgeries requiring longer time, and also provides great comfort.

In August 2020, NovaLink announced the launch of its isolation and disposable medical gown product namely "ANSI/AAMI PB70 Level 2 gowns", which are lightweight, low tinting, latex-free, and made from medical grade high-density sterile polyethylene.

COVID-19 Impact on the Surgical Gowns Market

Though COVID-19 led to global lockdown, however, the if positively impacted the demand for medical protective equipment and supplies as the fear of catching coronavirus infection was high in medical centers and hospitals owing to which the demand for medical gloves, gowns, among other protective equipment also increased. Various strategic collaborations were undertaken by companies to cater to such growing needs. For instance, in April 2020, Fabric Sources International Mohawk Industries combined their sources to provide urgent medical supplies to Emory Healthcare and Hamilton Medical Centre in Atlanta during COVID. Hence, now with ease in restrictions, the market for surgical gowns is expected to show a steady increase in the future
