This IDC Perspective discusses the four waves of IDC survey data over the past five years that provide good insight into the evolution of the adoption of and confidence in open source software (OSS) in the United States. "Customers enjoy considerable value from open source software, and particularly from commercially supported OSS - something that they increasingly recognize and appreciate," said Al Gillen, GVP, Software Development and Open Source, IDC. "From this point forward, there is likely to be more emphasis on secure supply chain software solutions for open source software, and in conjunction with more focus on maintaining the security of the underlying OSS projects, this should lead to better, ever more reliable solutions."
