With the development of China's economy and the improvement of residents' material living standards, more and more consumers are choosing airplanes as a means of travel, while China's booming e-commerce and express delivery industries have also contributed to the development of the aircraft market.
Most Chinese aircraft manufacturers lack independent R&D capabilities and their own intellectual property rights are scarce; therefore, Chinese aircraft are still mainly dependent on imports. According to CRI's analysis, from 2020-2022, China's aircraft imports declined continuously due to the impact of COVID-19 on the air transportation industry. In 2021, China imported 529 aircraft, down 9.42% year-on-year, with an import value of US$10.051 billion, up 46.83% year-on-year. From January to November 2022, China imported 138 aircraft, down 72.62% year-on-year, with an import value of US$6.073 billion, down 30.87% year-on-year.
In 2021, China imports aircraft from a total of 15 countries and regions. CRI analysis shows that the U.S., Germany, France, Canada and Austria are China's major sources of aircraft imports by volume. In 2021, China imported 105 aircraft from the U.S., accounting for 19.85% of total aircraft imports that year, with an import value of US$2.191 billion, or 21.80% of total imports.
China's civil aviation industry is expected to see strong growth as the global and Chinese COVID-19 outbreak dissipates, and CRI expects China's aircraft imports to gradually expand from 2023-2032 to meet passenger travel and cargo demand.
