Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug with analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effects, and is one of the major antipyretics and analgesic drugs in the world today. Ibuprofen was invented as early as 1961, and the drug began to be marketed in the United Kingdom and was launched in the United States in 1974. It is listed in the World Health Organization's standard list of essential drugs, and is one of the essential drugs for the basic public health system.
With the global winter respiratory diseases at their peak and a new round of outbreak hitting the world, the demand for ibuprofen is growing in the global market.
The patent of ibuprofen has long expired, and the API of ibuprofen sold in the global market mainly comes from China. In 2021, China exported 8110.10 tons of ibuprofen, down 3.88% year-on-year, and the export value was US$141 million, down 16.87% year-on-year. From January to November 2022, China exported 6833.26 tons of ibuprofen, down 9.12% year-on-year, and the export value was US$97 million, down 9.36% year-on-year. According to CRI's analysis, the reason for the decline in China's ibuprofen exports in 2021-2022 is related to the COVID-19 epidemic that affected the normal production of factories and the normal operation of the logistics industry.
In 2021, China exported ibuprofen to more than seventy countries and regions worldwide. CRI analysis shows that by export volume, the United States, India, Pakistan, Germany and Argentina are the main export destinations of ibuprofen from China. In 2021, China exported 2,900.75 tons of ibuprofen to the U.S., accounting for 35.77% of the total export volume of ibuprofen that year, with an export value of US$42 million, accounting for 36.18% of the total export value.
China is the world's largest producer and exporter of ibuprofen, and CRI expects the Chinese ibuprofen export market to remain stable in the future.
