Measurement of skin perfusion pressure refers to noninvasive test used in the assessment of peripheral arterial diseases, particularly in the determination of optimal extent of amputation and assessment of ischemia. Skin perfusion pressure reflects the status of the more proximal arterial system and is not interfered by arterial wall calcification. Measurement of skin perfusion pressure are not limited to such challenges and are useful in the analysis of severity of peripheral arterial diseases.

Laser Doppler technology to lead the global market

There are three prime techniques used for measurement of skin perfusion pressure (SPP) namely laser Doppler, photoplethysmography, and ultrasound. Laser Doppler technology is most commonly used in SPP. Laser Doppler sensor is placed in close proximity to the concerned area with temporary adhesive, for deriving pressure reading. As against photoplethysmography, which detect insity of the scattered light from the red blood cells, laser Doppler reads the pressure with the shift in Doppler frequency generated by the movements of the red cells. For this process, the patient is placed in supine position, with the blood pressure cuff wrapped over the sensor on the desired area, and is inflated thereon. The return of the microcirculatory flow is marked by the doubling of volume, measure of the percentage of the red blood cells moving in the area in comparison to the occlusion base line. Laser Doppler devices are also more accurate, have higher sensitivity, and reduced signal noise ration.
