The year 2014 was a growth year for stationary/fixed-position point-of-sale (POS) scanner hardware vendors. Revenues grew more than XX% year-over-year, with VDC predicting another XX% growth in 2015. We forecast global revenues to get to $XX by 2019 at a CAGR of XX%. Presentation scanners will lead this revenue increase through 2019 and will account for almost XX% of overall sales. Mini-slot or single window scanner sales will, however, decline at XX% due to a sharp drop in revenues from the Americas. This is being brought on by little-to-no investments in new product development for this form factor and rising popularity of on-counter presentation scanners. In-counter bioptic scanners/imagers will generate the most interest from engineering, innovation, and product development perspectives especially as vendors look to migrate their customers (Tier 1, in particular) from laser-based bioptic scanners to 100% camera-based solutions. Imagers will continue to gain favor, across both in-counter and on-counter form factors, given their ability to facilitate multiple applications with a single device. Tier 1 retailers will, however, drive investment in and upgrades to 100% camera-based multi-plane bioptic imagers. Their contribution will depend on vendors' ability to quantify productivity enhancements at the retail POS checkout. In collaboration with barcode alternatives like Digimarc's invisible barcode, present all over the product packaging, vendors have the distinct opportunity to communicate the significantly improved checkout times and faster process.
Challenges including pricing pressures due to hardware commoditization and availability of a broad range of alternative technology investment options - multi-functionality supporting mobile devices (rugged or consumer grade), cloud-based applications, and both online and offline payment security initiatives - will deter retailers from directing investments toward upgrading to more expensive fixed-position scanning solutions. POS scanner solution providers need to communicate the incremental benefits of newer product offerings that outweigh the benefits of directing those resources elsewhere. Applications like reading loyalty/gift cards off consumers' personal mobile devices and 2D barcoded coupons right at the checkout station with a single device will drive interest in the next-generation of POS scanning solutions. Vendors that focus on application development at the POS, including for loyalty, customer interaction, theft prevention, and advanced real-time analytics, in collaboration with their solution partners, as well as value creation, will be most successful in ramping up stationary POS scanner investment and implementation.
