executive summary

The global stationary thermal barcode printer market will grow 4.4% from 2016 to almost $XX in 2017, and will post a CAGR of 5.1% through 2021, reaching $XX. VDC's research indicates that revenues are picking up so far in 2017 compared to the year-ago period, due to factors including new product introductions by vendors like Honeywell, TSC Printers, and Zebra Technologies, and efforts to address traceability-related requirements in manufacturing and warehousing. 2015 was a banner year for printer hardware vendors, especially Zebra; this makes the 2016 comparison difficult. Hardware vendors in this market continue to face intense competition and commoditization, along with significant pricing pressures. This is prompting them to launch new products and new capabilities around software and services, while also altering their go-to-market strategies. Building a comprehensive ISV partner program is a prerogative for printer hardware vendors today and includes application developers and labeling solution providers among others. This is to help integrate printers with disparate solutions to serve applications across verticals including logistics, manufacturing, retail, and health care.

Desktop printers today generate a higher percentage of overall revenues at the expense of high-performance and relatively more expensive industrial printers, which speaks to the broader applicability of the lower cost form factor, like in the above-mentioned verticals. Honeywell, SATO, Toshiba TEC, and Zebra Technologies cannot rely on brand name recognition and product quality alone to achieve their sales and profitability targets. Competition is especially acute in high-growth regions like China, Germany, and South Korea where the vendor landscape is a healthy mix of market leaders and emerging contenders. VDC considers it critical for hardware vendors to meet compliance legislation, pricing, and application-specific labeling requirements of leading end-user verticals in every region in which they compete.

key findings

  • Retailer performance is affecting labeling solution investments, especially in North America. Slowdown in the retail vertical in North America is a cause for concern. However, omnichannel fulfillment-related trends now lead to significant investments in warehouses and distribution centers. This will shift the product mix more to high-performance printers as operators look to support tracking-intensive e-commerce workflows and modernize operations.
  • Product innovation must return to the forefront. There is need for a strong focus on new product development and introduction in this highly competitive and fragmented marketplace. There are specific user requirements not currently addressed by existing options, which represents opportunity for incumbents and newer entrants. These features include high-resolution printing capabilities on desktop printers and in-line verification in industrial printers.
  • Partner network development is essential for success. Even as Zebra has a stronghold on the label printer market in North America and Europe, it is essential for competitors to build value-driven channel relationships that will enable them to tap into segments with high growth potential. Offering software, services, and other value-added capabilities will help differentiate in the fragmented marketplace. VDC believes that vendors must be more hands-on with these organizations to address the diverse application requirements of deploying enterprises.
