目次

This report covers the overall market opportunity for rugged tablets and consumer-grade tablets used to support mobile enterprise line-of-business applications. This represents a subset of the overall enterprise tablet opportunity. It focuses beyond standard “content/media consumption” and email/calendaring use cases and looks at applications designed to support industry specific workflows. Target end users range from retail associates and delivery drivers to field service technicians and warehouse workers; from public safety officials and health care workers to insurance adjustors and building inspectors. The report includes market sizing and forecasts for rugged and consumer-grade devices and breaks down market opportunity for rugged mobile devices by region, industry, and application environments. This report also provides splits by level of ruggedization and analyzes current trends driving investment in enterprise mobility solutions and outlooks for mobile hardware vendors.

What questions are addressed ?

  • What is the outlook for tablets used for enterprise and government mobility applications?
  • What is the relative opportunity by regional market, industry, and application?
  • What is the outlook for rugged tablets, and to what extent are they affected and potentially displaced by consumer devices?
  • How do mobile device requirements align with specific vertical markets and applications?
  • What are the primary device functionality requirements by industry?
  • Which mobile applications are end users currently supporting and/or planning to deploy?
  • What is the demand by mobile OS and how does it differ by regional market, industry, and application?

Executive Summary

After several high-flying years of strong growth, the tablet market crashed back to Earth in late 2014 and early 2015 amid growing competition from popular large smartphones (phablets), a slower than expected replacement/upgrade cycle among existing end users, and challenging primary use case positioning of tablets relative to PCs and smartphones. As a result, the market will experience its first contraction in 2015 with overall unit shipments declining by XXX. Although VDC expects the market to rebound in 2016, annual growth through 2019 is forecast at a modest XXX CAGR.

Although overall demand for tablets has slowed, the enterprise and government segment presents many compelling use cases, especially for highly mobile workers. In 2014, approximately XX% of overall tablet shipments were purchased/deployed by commercial or public sector/government organizations. Of those XXX units, approximately XXX were deployed to support a variety of line of business (LoB) applications. More specifically, in 2014, VDC estimates that more than XXX rugged tablets and XXX consumer-grade tablets were deployed to support LoB applications. By 2019, shipments are expected to scale to XXX rugged tablets and XXX consumer-grade tablets.

While the rugged tablet market continues to grow, year-on-year rates have slackened considerably to single digits, from growth rates that were in the XX to XX% range in previous years. A maturing and saturated market means that growth rates will remain modest throughout 2019. A sizeable portion of demand has come from industry verticals that seek to move away from other rugged devices, such as notebooks and vehicle-mounted devices in areas like field services, warehousing, and, to an increasing degree, public safety. Other industries, such as manufacturing, present a green field opportunity because decision-makers are deploying tablets to aid LoB workflows. As the use cases and applications for ruggedized applications expand, so too does the variety in device capabilities and specifications, especially around display size, OS, and level of ruggedness.

Key Findings

  • The rugged tablet market continues to grow, although at a slower pace of XX%, and reached XXX in 2014. The rugged tablet market is expected to grow by XX% in 2015 to reach XXX, reflecting maturing market conditions and declining demand. Through 2019, VDC projects an annual CAGR of XX% with unit growth of XX%. In contrast to the consumer tablet market, the vast majority of rugged tablets are x86 devices running a full Windows operating system. Although VDC projects strong growth for rugged Android tablets, shipments are only expected to reach XX% of total rugged tablet volume by 2019.
  • The use of non-rugged (consumer) tablets within the enterprise is growing faster than the overall tablet market, which contracted for the first time in 2014. The enterprise segment is projected to grow at XX% through 2018, well above consumer shipments, which are anticipated to grow by XX% annually over the same period.
  • Integrated cellular functionality is an increasingly desirable feature and identified by end users as a top four selection criteria for enterprise tablets. In 2014, enterprise tablets with cellular connectivity represented approximately XX% of all units shipped. Among rugged tablets, the ratio was even higher; XX% of units shipped with integrated cellular functionality.
  • For rugged tablets, Windows is the dominant operating system and represents more than XX% of shipments. Android-based rugged tablets are gaining acceptance and some large rollouts support field service applications. By 2019, however, Android's share of the rugged tablet market is expected to reach only XX% of shipments.
  • Among non-rugged “consumer” tablets that support LoB applications, iOS leads with an operating system share of XX%. Growth through 2019, however, will be strongest for Windows solutions and Android tablets, which, combined, will reach XX% of shipments by 2019.
  • Demand for tablets with larger display sizes (>10”) is expected to substantially outpace demand for smaller tablets in the enterprise sector. In the rugged tablet sector, all of the leading products-Pansonic's G1, Getac's F110, Xplore's Bobcat, and Motion by Xplore's R12-have display sizes of at least 10.1”.

Executive Summary

  • While Apple remains the standard bearer for this category, the growing acceptance of Android among enterprise customers and the success of Microsoft's Surface Pro have eroded some of Apple's share. Apple's alliance with IBM, the widely anticipated “iPad Pro,” and changes to the upcoming iOS 9, however, provide sufficient evidence that Apple is serious about the enterprise tablet market. Fast follower Samsung has similar enterprise initiatives and continues to invest in its KNOX security solutions to enable its products to be used in highly regulated sectors.
