The global market for presence/absence sensors is forecasted to grow at a 4% CAGR over the next five years, buoyed by strong demand from increased levels of automation as well as improving economic conditions. Presence/absence sensors are categorized as being able to sense a target and delivering a digital signal in the event that the sensor is tripped. There are several types of sensors under study within this section including the following:
Presence/absence sensors are generally very basic and have not changed drastically in the past 5-10 years. There are many suppliers for these types of sensors and there are typically few differences in terms of features between the different products. Design engineers will look for flexibility in the sensor format and wiring considerations as well as price when selecting a sensor. Many of these products can wear out or become damaged over time, so there is a decent amount of replacement business and recurring revenue.
Aside from the standard sensing technology, there are few differences among many of these sensors. One trend that is new but that has been slow to take hold is the new smart sensor technology. Smart sensors have a microchip integrated into the unit and are able to deliver historical operating results to do things like condition monitoring. There are also instances where several “dumb” sensors may be wired into a hub that could relay similar information. Machine builders are typically very conservative and have been hesitant to move to these new smart sensors. They also cost significantly more and therefore do not have much value if the machine builder does not choose to fully integrate all of the features. A knowledge gap also exists within this area, so the adoption levels should increase as sales teams and engineers become more comfortable with the new smart sensors.
An interesting phenomenon in the past couple of years, particularly with the rise of China's automation economy, is the increased amount of recycled or repurposed sensors. As systems are de-commissioned, there are often valuable components left on the machine that could be used in other machines. One case in particular is that of Apple. With each new iteration of the iPhone comes new manufacturing technology and machine designs. These systems do not change much in terms of the core technology. However, there are many small tweaks that need to be made in order to fit new components. This leaves a situation where the physical design of a machine may change but the core technology and sensor targets are essentially the same. In these and other types of cases some sensors will be recycled. As the durability and lifetime of sensors increases, this occurrence will happen more often. This effect is still relatively uncommon and does not bear much impact into potential revenue; however, it is significant enough to be noted as an emerging trend.
The presence/absence section of the position sensor market is very mature and will continue to behave as a commodity market with little differentiation between products. Sensor suppliers can still add value in a few different ways, such as through accelerated lead times, outstanding customer service, or with pre-fabricated cable assemblies. Developing products that are easy to configure and install is a great strategy, especially as core technology costs fall over time. Component engineers will be looking to save money by saving time, and savvy suppliers will position their presence/absence products to respond to this need.
