Abstract

Market Overview

Competitive pressures for stationary scanners vary by product category

The 3 distinct product categories within the stationary scanning segment - industrial scanners and imagers, and point-of-scale scanners - are served by distinct vendors. Datalogic is the only supplier with a sizeable presence in each of the 3 technology markets. This can be attributed to the following characteristics typical to the company:

  • Strategic acquisitions in the industrial market (most recent being Accu-Sort announced in November, 2011), enabling presence in adjacent (and historically under-penetrated) vertical market segments.
  • Extensive product portfolio addressing the market needs and requirements across a variety of enterprise end-user environments - from industrial/manufacturing to T&L to retail.
  • Continued investments in developing alliances with distribution channel players having a global footprint.

VDC's assessment of the market indicates that vendors are pursuing unique strategies to address demands of each of the distinct market segments:

  • Industrial stationary scanner and imager suppliers understand the high degree of customization and testing required to support their customers. These vendors provide their key accounts and channel partners with access to project management, application engineering and unparalleled technical support.
  • POS stationary scanner suppliers rely on relationships with POS terminal and workstation vendors to drive OEM agreements and strategic alliances.

VDC expects continued consolidation of this highly fragmented vendor ecosystem, particularly on the industrial scanning side. As vendors look to support additional functionality (such as machine vision, dimensioning, logistics automation, etc) using their traditional scanning and imaging portfolio, inorganic growth strategies could potentially be the chosen route.

Market Estimates & Forecasts

Increased consideration being given to camera-based systems even as laser technology continues to dominate

Manufacturing setups continue to embrace laser due to advantages related to cost and performance (more aggressive scanning at longer distances in ambient light); however, they are increasingly complementing these solutions with industrial imagers as a means to support evolved data capture requirements. Drivers of this trend include:

  • The growing need to capture more data and information using barcode technology - as a means to generate ROI faster and extend investment value.
  • Performance enhancements that enable camera-based imaging solutions to compete effectively with laser scanners in multiple installation environments.

Investment in stationary scanners at the Point-of-Sale (POS) continues to occur in both established and new accounts, not only as a result of replacement cycles, but also to enable and support platform expansion. For example:

  • Suppliers are increasingly adding new functionality to their stationary scanners to improve performance, support self-service and combat fraud at the POS. The integration of EAS and RFID deactivators and weigh scales are relevant examples.
  • Enterprises are increasingly complementing their in-counter systems with handheld imagers to support mobile marketing and other in-store applications where mobility is critical (such as, inventory control).

Strategic Issues, Drivers & Trends

Expansion into new and emerging market segments largely dependent upon channel development

Market & Channel Development Strategies

In order to achieve consistent (high) growth rates, VDC recommends the following courses of action to (handheld and stationary) barcode scanner hardware vendors:

  • Invest in building strategic alliances with localized distribution channel partners to better service target clientele, particularly in developing economies.
  • Invest considerable amount of resources in building strategic alliances and partnerships with the ISV community in order to:
  • Customize their application sets to meet the needs of a wide range of installation environments.
  • Address core transaction processing requirements, while providing additional guidance to develop more business intelligence, enhance operations on grand improve the overall customer experience.

Stationary scanner vendors are increasingly focused owing their geographical footprints, penetrating emerging vertical markets and applications, and getting more business out of their current installed base (by way of technology migration, updates and/or upgrades).

  • Suppliers are looking to extend the value proposition of existing data capture investments by upgrading legacy scanners with next generation product, and by extending the value of image-capture solutions by layering on additional applications.
  • While some suppliers are content to serve a short list of key accounts in established markets, most strive to penetrate adjacent market opportunities (for barcode scanning and imaging) that can be addressed with existing product offerings.

Suppliers must recognize that the success of their market penetration and geographic expansion strategies will need to be supported by the following key development enablers:

  • Understanding the sourcing preferences of end user enterprises in each of the target market segments.
  • Creation of a balanced channel portfolio to meet a broad range of solution requirements.
  • Supporting channel partners by providing access to sales leads, market development funding, technical support, and custom engineering capabilities.
