Suppliers well advised to ensure their mechanical ITG solutions meet/exceed needs of targeted customer base

Users in most mechanical inventory tank gauging consuming markets and applications are all seeking the ability to do more with less; looking to achieve the most accurate operations possible, better manage and control inventory levels, improve quality and accuracy in production and storage, and much more. It is almost stating the obvious that suppliers should consider developing ITG devices which will help the customer do one or more of these positive actions.

Assuming a supplier's specific ITG device can meet the customer's application requirements, suppliers need to focus on providing greater accuracy, durability, reliability and repeatability; ensure product durability and legacy support; easy maintenance and calibration (including remote as applicable), and, in many applications, be intrinsically safe or explosion- proof.

An increasing number of users are seeking to invest in mechanical ITG devices which support leading fieldbus protocols such as HART, Profibus and Modbus and for an increasing number of future applications Ethernet application layer network protocols such as EtherNet/IP, ProfiNet and Modbus TCP, among others. Although there will likely be a sizeable installed base of proprietary networks for the foreseeable future, suppliers should anticipate a continued migration to more open networks in future as flexibility is desired.

A growing number of users are embracing the use of wireless ITG systems. Suppliers would be wise to considerdeveloping interface support for Wireless HART, 802.1 1gm, ISA 100.1 la and several proprietary networks which are perceived as providing greater security and longer distance capabilities in the narrow band networks of 400 MHz up to 5 GHz.

Suppliers are recommended to develop different mounting configurations which can be tailored to meet the needs of their specific customer base(s) in order to achieve a greater level of product differentiation. Suppliers in general should consider devices which can be mounted on the top, side and/or bottom of tanks.

VDC recommends that suppliers seek to develop mechanical ITG devices which closely imitate the benefits and value proposition provided by single point floats as these devices provide many tangible benefits such as adequate accuracy, low price, ease of use and being a well established and familiar solution over time.

The decision of whether to develop specific mechanical ITG devices to target a specific consuming market or application should be made after reviewing the detailed findings provided in the Excel exhibits in the appendix to select those products which enjoy the greatest penetration within certain select industry segments. As was cited previously, suppliers are well advised to target more expensive devices, such as float & tape, at markets and applications which can support the higher price tag as the ROl from enhanced performance is more clearly discernible in sales presentations and marketing literature.

There are drivers expected to propel growth as well as inhibitors that may dampen growth overall and by product type

Given the level of low fragmentation in the mechanical inventory tank gauging (ITG) devices markets at the product level, the application level and consuming industry level as well as the technical requirements of various customer clusters, both key drivers and inhibitors impact the market outlook and the success level of suppliers of mechanical ITG devices serving markets across the world.

There are some general drivers affecting the overall inventory tank gauging market. Some of the key drivers affecting growth of the overall ITG market include the following:

  • The increasing pressure on companies and organizations to compete more effectively in general and, in particular with suppliers from other, lower-cost countries, is creating a growing need to collect, gather and analyze operational data in greater volumes and to do so with faster response times and also with increasing accuracy. This overall trend is helping to drive an expected increase in demand for most of the mechanical ITG device shipments under study.
  • The increasing reliance on computer functionality to manage a growing number of applications is creating an opportunity for suppliers to sell products which interface with PCs using popular open network interfaces such as HART, Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet and various application layer Ethernet network protocols such as EtherNet/IP, ProfiNet and Mobus TCP. There will remain a sizable installed base of ITG devices relying on proprietary networks which several of the leading ITG suppliers developed, but the trend towards interoperability is inevitably moving towards their eventual extinction in the decades to come.
  • The need among customers to increasingly maximize their ROl on inventory storage and/or custodial transfer investments is creating a growing demand for mechanical ITG devices which enable the customer to access actionable data from ITG sensor inputs without having to make unnecessary investments more manual measurements or information gathering.
  • Customers are increasingly developing new applications for which the requirement for an mechanical ITG device may be present and the additional actionable information obtained can enhance profitability, quality or response times and certainly improve accuracy. Such developments are helping to propel increased demand for mechanical ITG devices and related services.

There are some general inhibitors affecting the overall mechanical ITG market. Some of the inhibitors affecting growth include the following:

  • The increasing reliance on electronic ITG devices may also be serving as a means of cannibalizing certain mechanical ITG solutions.
  • The increasing need to companies to reduce their costs or increase their ROl may force them to delay the need to invest in new (or upgrade) mechanical ITG devices such that the overall market experiences a slowdown as customers seek to extend the shelf/duty life cycle of existing ITG solutions (including mechanical).

Market outlook for mechanical inventory tank gauging devices sluggish based on macros, growth varies by technology

Feedback from respondents based on their total average expected spending on process level measurement solutions indicates a clear need for suppliers to focus their sales and marketing resources on selling solutions rather than level measurement devices only. Only 51% of the on the device itself whereas 49% of their investmentwas on things such as installation costs, calibration and maintenance, networking costs, consulting/specifying costs, etc.
