Abstract

Market Overview

Barcode technology migration taking place; from scanners to imagers, thermal transfer to direct thermal printing

Suppliers derived more than $3.4 billion from sales of barcode solutions (scanners, printers and consumables) to industrial/manufacturing enterprises globally. although the more mature country markets (i.e.: US, western Europe, Japan) accounted for the majority of global revenues, emerging country manufacturing markets in BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) and MIST (Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan) are expected to fuel heavier adoption of AIDC technologies through 2015.

While developing economies are increasingly investing in laser scanners and linear imagers to support infrastructure development and the need to adhere to global regulatory standards, there is a gradual yet persistent migration from these technologies to 2D imagers taking place in more mature country markets in Western Europe and North America, across industrial installation environments.

Manufacturing end-users across production environments including electronics, pharmaceuticals, automotive and machinery are extensively leveraging 2D imagers to support a broad range of applications including components/part traceability, quality assurance and control, work-in-process tracking, assembly verification, medical device tracking, etc.

Industrial barcode printers are being extensively deployed by manufacturers to improve efficiency and productivity in a number of ways including: on-demand label printing, data accuracy, ease of tracking, and reduction in workflow downtime.

The current global shortage of thermal transfer ribbons is causing end-users across multiple vertical market segments to shift to direct thermal printing technology. In the industrial environment, however, VDC expects to see less of this migration because of the need for durable labels with a longer life, highly suited to harsh elements (including temperatures, chemicals, etc.)

Market Segmentation, Estimates & Forecasts

Investment drivers pertain to improving business processes and reducing operating expenses

In many instances, manufacturers need to be compliant with government, industry and/or customer mandates and guidelines in order to conduct their business and serve their customers, particularly in verticals such as food, pharmaceutical, consumer goods, and machinery, amongst others. This has lead to increased investment in barcode solutions as they not only can ensure compliance, but they can also help to automate many of the systems that need to be compliant.

Compliance remains a primary investment driver; however, more mature markets and enterprises that have already attained consistent compliance are now expanding their solutions to focus more on operation improvements and cost reductions, by continuing to leverage the business intelligence generated, converging their solutions with other AIDC technologies, and further integrating their systems throughout the enterprise and value chain.

While manufacturers have typically invested heavily in barcode technologies for inventory management and shipping/receiving solutions, WIP, reverse logistics, and quality control are currently among the fastest growing applications for end-users in this vertical market environment.

With the introduction of 2D imagers and their extended image capture capabilities, manufacturers are increasingly enhancing their barcode systems with these devices to create additional value such as the association of an image for QA/QC. Lead adopting vertical markets in the manufacturing sector include electronics and automotive.
