The global market for barcode solutions (scanners, printers, consumables) in the transportation/logistics vertical exceeded $4.6 billion in 2010 and is expected to grow at a Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 5.1 % through 2015. More than 3/4 of total global revenue was derived from the more mature US and European markets; however, emerging country markets within Latin America (i.e.: Brazil. Mexico), Middle East and Africa (includign Saudi Arabia, South Africa), and APAC (China, India, South East Asia, etc) will drive significant growth throughout the forecast period as the transportation infrastructure required to support the booming manufacturing and retail sectors in these regions is deployed.

Similar to other verticals, compliance (industry, government, customer) continues to drive investmetn in the emerging markets, creating demand for less advanced, well established and/or lower priced solutions such as laser scanning and printing and general purpose linear imagers. Having already met compliance-related requirements, investmetn within mature markets such as the US and Western Europe is more driven by teh need to attain operational efficiencies and reduce costs.

Barcode scanners are being extensively leveraged by transportation and logistics operators globally to improve accuracy and efficiency in a variety of applications including stock control, order fulfillment, asset utilizatio, and streamlining processes and workflow. Imagers have been gaining increased investment consideration over laser scanners over the past 12 months as end-users look to improve read rates, overall productivity and efficiencies; their highly competitive (and attractive) price points are also proving to be a major contributing factor for this enhanced budget allocation.

Both stationary and mobile barcode printers have been deployed extensively within installation environments in the transportation vertical to enable effective management of products throughout their lifecycle - for functions including purchaseing, shipping, tracking, and reverse logistics. Desktop printers are more widely used thatn their tabletop counteparts within installation environments that have light duty barcode labeling requirements - given the ease of use/loading and lower relative price-points. This need is prompting enterprises to invest in AIDC technologies to automate processes, accurately track inventory, increase transparency and optimize productivity.

As secure wireless networks become more pervasive in this economic sector, a growing number of operators are investing in mobile barcode solutions (scanners and printers) to support applications such as receiving, work-in-process, cross-docking and quality inspections throughout the enterprise.
