Abstract

Market Overview

Continuation of projects and emerging standards to redefine how AutoID Solutions are used and leveraged

Suppliers derived more than $663 million from the sales of barcode solutions (scanners, printers and consumables) to government entities globally in 2010, with over 70% of revenues coming in from North America and Europe. Both military and civilian agencies are continuing to invest in AIDC technologies to improve security, ensure compliance and reduce costs.

Primary applications for military solutions continue to revolve around mission planning and operations, logistics, maintenance and repair / asset management and border control/protection. Key solutions are becoming increasingly complex - not only in terms of the types of applications supported, but also with regard to the breadth of users, especially across multiple agencies.

As a result of the increased sophistication and also the fragmented approach to adoption, government bodies are increasingly looking to consolidate and standardize solutions.

While much of the growth associated with the North American stimulus has played out, government agencies across the globe are expected to allocate budgets toward investment in barcoding to reduce operating expenses, grow revenues and improve services. Some of the high growth barcode applications within the government sector include - asset tracking, security & access control, and e-citations.

Mobile devices including handheld scanners and barcode label printers are in particularly high demand within this vertical market environment as a means to convey information to and facilitate data collection by police officials, firefighters, etc. driven in large part by governments' concern for the safety of their uniformed personnel - detailing information, in real time, pertaining to occupants of vehicle they are about to pull over, for instance.

Federal government agencies are also investing significant amounts to improve and expand their field operations with applications that harness real-time data transfer and GPS tracking and navigation. A tremendous amount of opportunity exists for the ISV community to extend the device platform, and develop and support new applications.

Market Segmentation, Estimates & Forecasts

Significant convergence and high barriers to entry position ISVs and SIs as key gatekeepers

Despite longer sales cycles and higher education and training requirements, the government sector is rife with opportunities for those suppliers and channel organizations willing to invest in it.

Partnerships or acquisitions of ISVs and system integrators with deep market knowledge and established footprints are typically required to conduct business and grow share in this sector.

Convergence of AutoID solutions continues at a facilitated rate. The end user is increasingly turning to their solution providers to support and leverage multiple technologies - Barcode, RFID, RTLS, NFC, Sensors, etc. -as a means to extend technology platforms and provide unprecedented visibility and benefits.

Consumer devices are expected to continue to penetrate - and play an increased role in this sector. VDC expects more deployments of consumer mobile devices in 2012, but the true level of adoption will be hard to pinpoint until the existing deployments answer the question of whether a consumer device can be successfully used in a rugged environment and if they are able to meet the stringent security specifications.

Direct part marking of barcodes and alphanumeric information (date, lot #) continues to gain traction in an increasing diversity of applications in this sector.

  • High compliance requirements in a 'harsh' label environments.
  • Mandates such as Spec 2000 and UID
  • Increased performance of imaging and verification solutions.

As the need to decode more information increases, demand for non-linear codes will continue to scale, driving demand for low cost laser scanners and linear imagers capable of decoding PDF417 barcode.
