Abstract

Market Overview

Investment in barcode solutions drive operational improvements and enhance customer service levels

Suppliers derived almost $2 billion from sales of barcode solutions (scanners, printers and consumables) to retailers globally. Enterprises in North America and Europe accounted for 70 % of vendors' overall revenues. Emerging country markets within APAC, Latin America, and the Middle East & Africa are expected to register the highest growth rates through 2015.

Both stationary and mobile barcode printers are being extensively deployed within installation environments in the retail vertical to support a variety of applications including inventory management and control, enhanced levels of customer engagement, marketing and promotional initiatives, and streamlining the merchandise returns (reverse logistics) process.

  • Desktop printers are the dominant stationary form factor installed given the relatively light duty barcode labeling requirements and lower price points.
  • Mobile printers are also being leveraged to enable on-demand labeling and for increasing overall operational efficiencies.

Barcode scanners are extensively deployed within retail in-store environments to support checkout applications, as retailers strive to maximize productivity and improve customers' overall experience. Laser scanners continue to have a well-established footprint within this vertical market and are deeply integrated with the point-of-sale process. Imaging solutions (both linear and 2D) have been receiving increased investment consideration.

Suppliers are increasingly tapping into the growing ISV community in order to develop and support the wide array of application capabilities afforded by imaging solutions. Vendors that can enable end-use enterprises to effectively harness the information made available through 2D scanners and imagers (via in-house data mining capabilities, acquisitions or strategic alliances) can be expected to hold a significant competitive advantage over their peers in the coming 12-24 months. Value-added support services such as these will help them differentiate their offerings portfolio in an otherwise increasingly commoditized hardware marketplace.

Investments in AIDC technologies within the highly customer-centric retail vertical is being driven by the need to be in alignment with consumer expectations and elevate overall service levels. Retailers are looking to trim costs and improve operational efficiencies by investing in solutions that help enhance automation, reduce data-related errors, improve customer relationships, and create new avenues for personalization - resulting in sizeable revenue-generating opportunities.

Market Segmentation, Estimates & Forecasts

Mobile devices enabling retailers to bring AutoID to the point of interaction/transaction

image1

Retailers continue to invest in barcode solutions due to the significant value provided by loyalty couponing, product visibility and operational efficiencies such as reduction in out-of-stocks and enhanced human resource management.

End-user enterprises within the retail vertical have been allocating a greater percentage of their AIDC technology budgets toward investments in imaging solutions due to rapidly declining prices, proven ROI, improved performance and an increasing number of applications that extend the capabilities and functionalities of barcode scanner platforms.

Enterprises within this vertical are looking to address a wide variety of application requirements with a single device like a 2D imager, including:

Mobile marketing - including mobile couponing, loyalty/gift cards Age Verification - aiding in the selling of age-restricted products Auto-forms Population - parsing government-issued ID card data Image Capture - pictures of signatures for proof-of-delivery, damaged packages, forms recognition, etc.

The role of mobility within barcode solutions is becoming more critical as the solution becomes more pervasive, particularly for in-field/in-store applications where enterprises are bringing AIDC scanning and printing at the point of interaction or where mobile devices (scanners, rugged mobile computers, notebooks tablets) already have an installed base and stationary readers are impractical.
