Improvements in productivity and quality of care driving investments in barcode solutions

Suppliers derived more than $446 million from the sales of barcode solutions (scanners, printers and consumables) to health care enterprises globally, with organizations in North America and Western Europe accounting for over 70% of revenues. Emerging country markets within APAC, Latin America and the Middle East, and Africa are expected to register the highest growth rates through 2015 due to rising health care costs, the need to improve quality of care, skilled labor shortages and a growing demand to address "medical tourism' (the practice of travelling abroad to receive health care).

The need to maintain compliance with evolving regulations and mandates to protect patient health information is continuing to drive interest and increased investment in secure AIDC solutions. As a result of significant government and public scrutiny, health care organizations are increasingly investing in barcode solutions as a means to improve and automate operations, and reduce costs to the enterprise and its patients.

Health care facilities are increasingly turning to AIDC technologies in the face of rising costs (i.e. insurance, bad debt) and the growing need to reduce, if not eliminate, medical errors.
