Abstract

Market Overview

AIDC investment drivers within commercial services - customer compliance, cost savings, competitive differentiation

Suppliers derived more than $430 million from the sales of barcode solutions (scanners, printers and consumables) to commercial services enterprises globally, with organizations in North America and Western Europe accounting for almost 65% of revenues. Emerging country markets within APAC, Latin America and the Middle East, and Africa are expected to register the highest growth rates through 2015 as enterprises (financial and educational institutions, insurance providers, hospitality businesses) increasingly invest in automation solutions in order to meet growing demand within these economies.

The value propositions associated with barcode solutions coupled with falling price points and the availability of packaged solutions form a single source have enticed smaller businesses to invest. Some of the primary benefits include:

  • Cost savings
  • Employee and customer empowerment
  • Multi-application support
  • Reduction in manual errors
  • Enhanced suggestive selling capabilities
  • Operational efficiencies

Much of the demand for barcode technologies in the commercial services sector is being fueled by field sales/field service operators who have invested heavily in inventory management and asset tracking solutions. Route accounting, signature capture, work order management and vehicle tracking applications are expected to be among the fastest growing within this vertical over the next 12-24 months.

Mature markets, including North America and Western Europe, have been seeing increased investments in AIDC solutions form these service-based enterprises. Commercial services is a sector rich in application development for suppliers and their ISV (Independent Software Vendor) partners. Applications vary widely ranging from ticketing at sporting and entertainment venues to specimen archiving at museums. Field workers, for instance, are investing heavily in barcode technologies to reduce errors, improve productivity and streamline operators.

Market Segmentation, Estimates & Forecasts

Broader adoption with more standadization

Leading vertical markets within the Commercial Services sector include Hospitality, Telecom/Utilities, Education, and Financial Services.

This sector is especially rife with a diverse base of high growth barcode applications (i.e.: guest management, ticketing , university campus applications), many of which require a robust mix of hardware and software components and are increasingly complemented by other AIDC technologies including RFID, GPS and card-based solutions to support applications ranging from transaction processing to access control.

Suppliers keen to cultivate demand in this market have encountered longer sales cycles with higher education and training requirements. Independent software vendors and system integrators with deep market knowledge are required to grow share in these segments.

A significant number of commercial service enterprises are expecting to invest in cloud-based/hosted solutions as a means to minimize complexity, reduce maintenance/support/refresh costs, access more applications and services and leverage the data related benefits of a centrally hosted solution (i.e., access to more comprehensive, higher quality data and enhanced visibility).

While Tier-1 organizations have historically been known to invest heavily in technologies to achieve automation, lower tier enterprises have begun significantly leveraging the benefits offered by these solutions to bring about operational efficiencies, drive down costs and enhance the level of service offered to customers.
