Market Overview

Significant growth expected in established and emerging markets with complex and converged solutions

The global RFID market in health care was valued at $157 Million in 2010 and is expected to exceed $456 Million by 2015 - a CAGR of 23.8%. Highlights include:

  • Approximately 123 million tags were shipped in 2010, a value expected to approach 540 million by 2015 (CAGR = 34.4%).
  • More than 51,000 readers were sold last year. VDC predicts that more than 173,000 readers will be shipped in 2015.
  • Americas - primarily the US - accounted for more than half of all global revenues in 2010 and is anticipated to represent more than 61% within 5 years as the region's growth outpaces the rest of the world.

The health care industry is viewing RFID through a broader lens than previously. RFID in this market is evolving from solving 1 or 2 specific problems in a limited number of departments or facilities to a robust, enterprise-wide solution that is addressing a multitude of business issues.

As the technology continues to be adopted throughout the enterprise and its value chains, it will increasingly be converged with other technologies and systems to further meet application and installation environment specifications, as well as becoming more deeply integrated. These converged systems are rapidly providing significant benefits, aggressive ROIs and unprecedented visibility and business intelligence.

Aside from more mature HF card-based applications such as security/access control and e-ID, the current market is characterized by active solutions that leverage the WiFi infrastructure (present in most hospitals in the US), passive supply chain applications, and several patient-facing and safety applications (i.e., medication administration, object pairing, enforcement of sanitization protocols).

There is a trend to embed RFID in this sector. Tags are being embedded in a diversity of tools, instruments, equipment, devices, implants and assets as a means to provide more efficient track/ trace, object utilization, MRO (maintenance record optimization), compliance and more recently, patient health and monitoring.

For many of the more mature applications, the primary distribution channel is VAR/SI or dealer/distributor; however, there are instances where the supplier's expertise and specialization or the account's size merits a direct relationship. This is primarily what is occurring in the burgeoning RTLS market in health care, but is not expected to be the preferred channel when supply chain solutions begin to gain more traction.

Embedding RFID creating significant value and opportunity

Passive systems support a diversity of applications such as security/access control, e-ID, inventory control, asset management and patient safety leveraging a host of form factors, including labels, smartcards, ID badges, wristbands, alert "buttons" and a variety of ruggedized plastic-housed.

More recently, passive transponders are embedded into critical equipment and tools, as well as medical devices and implants. These small form factor, more rugged tags are expected to last for the object's total lifecycle and are frequently used for track/trace and MRO (maintenance record optimization) applications.

  • Equipment manufacturers are beginning to tag at the source, embedding transponders in their equipment to not only benefit their clients, but also be leveraged internally for additional operational benefits. Examples include monitors, pumps, and mobile and fixed position diagnostic equipment.
  • Implant and medical device suppliers are embedding transponders into their products, enabling simplified tracking and MRO (i.e.: reading through the body to identify and update information on an knee or hip implant). Recently, implant manufacturers have been piloting programs to integrate sensor technology into their embedded tags as a means to monitor and fight infection (after a medical procedure).
  • Enterprises are having tags embedded into critical tools such as surgical instruments to not only enable the track / trace, but to ensure compliance (i.e., sanitization) and proper kitting (i.e., ensuring all instruments are present in a surgical kit).

The embedded movement does not only apply to transponders... reader modules are being embedded - or offered as an add-on accessory - in more devices commonly used within the health care facility to further build out the infrastructure in support of enterprise-wide adoption. For example, reader modules are being embedded into/attached to mobile devices, response and supply carts, "smart" or "secure" cabinets, supply areas and kiosks.

RFID adoption in health care is not only increasing rapidly across a robust number of applications, but many of these deployments are also finally beginning to scale and expand. Although the majority of installations remain relatively small as compared to item-level programs in retail, facilities are swiftly scaling their deployments and expanding them to be more enterprise (and health care campus) wide and address a diversity of business issues.

Similar to retail, health care providers are viewing RFID more broadly, capable of supporting a host of applications. These solutions are being deeply integrated and converged with other systems and processes, expanding the technology platforms and further leveraging the business intelligence gathered to create more value.

And unlike retail, RFID in health care is also being used to save and better the lives of the patient as well as reduce the costs associated with treatment and prevention. Examples include compliance with cleaning protocols, medication dispensing management, inventory control, insurance reporting, emergency response, patient ID and staff management.

Although there is tremendous activity occurring in the health care sector, this market continues to be plagued by constrained and highly scrutinized budgets, slow technology adoption, high regulation/compliance and a general 'old school' mentality. VDC estimates that RFID has penetrated far less than 20% of the health care market.
