Market Overview

Significant recovery in global demand seen in 2010; growth expected over the next few years

  • Recovery in the global economy during 2010 fueled solid growth in all regional markets. As economic conditions improved, enterprises reconsidered IT investments including POS related projects that had been shelved due to the recession. The fulfillment of this pent-up demand gave the POS terminal market a notable lift during 2010.
  • The economic recovery seen in 2010 resulted in a global market for POS Terminals /Workstations that exceeded $2.7 billion during the 2010 calendar year.
  • VDC expects gradual, ongoing economic recovery to continue in 2011 and subsequent years. Accordingly, we have forecasted the POS Terminal market to grow at 6.9% CAGR through the end of the study period, 2015.
  • The Americas and EMEA especially Western Europe remain the major regional markets for POS Terminal investment, and comprise over 73% of the global market.
  • However, APAC and areas of Eastern Europe represent the strongest regional growth potential for expanding into newer, still developing markets. POS technology has yet to reach its saturation point in these regions, making them strategic targets for both regional and global POS suppliers looking to expand their market presence.

Strategic Issues, Trends & Market Drivers

End user focus on Price, increased competition driving down AFSP; TCO increasingly under scrutiny

  • In addition to requirements related to vertical-specific functionality and POS integration with other customer facing technologies such as self checkout solutions, kiosks, and personal shopping solutions end users are increasingly weighing factors such as power consumption and expected lifecycle/durability in regards to their impact on TOO.
  • Average factory selling prices (AFSP5) are expected to decline 2.1% on average annually during the forecast period, as reduced component costs and increasing competition from high value/low cost POS models offered by a number of manufacturers exert downward pressure on pricing.
  • Despite declining prices, end user expectations remain high in regards to value, functionality, and performance across all verticals and tiers. Particular requirements and applications are tier and vertical dependent, but the following trends are currently shaping demand for POS terminals:
    • Interest in energy efficientterminals continues to be driven by the goal of cost cutting and reductions in TCO - with the ability to tout one's operations as being green - as a side benefit. Terminals such as Fujitsu's TP-X II and NCR's RealPOS7OXRT reduce power costs by using low power consumption processors.
    • Sub verticalsthat are particularly harsh on POS equipment, such as food service and large retailers/mass merchants are deploying extended lifecycle hardware to reduce maintenance requirements/ TCO and increase lifespan and ROl. Companies like Posiflex are meeting this demand with terminals using fanless design and Compact Flash memory to eliminate moving parts and potential points of failure.
    • Continued adoption of Thin Client terminals, especially in large, multi-lane enterprises, is driven by the promise of easier maintenance and integration.
    • The demand for touch screen displays is growing across most segments, and VDC expects this trend to continue at the expense of non-touch displays, as prices for touch screens erode.

Software becoming increasingly specialized; end user interest in hosted solutions is growing

  • Software rather than hardware is increasingly the primary consideration among end users when deploying a new POS solution. The maturing of hardware technology, combined with the more vertical- specific requirements for POS solution. The maturing of hardware technology, combined with the more vertical-specific requirements for POS system functionality, is drawing end users' primary focus to software solutions. As a result:
    • It is far more difficult to differentiate on hardware alone, as POS hardware becomes commoditized.
    • Partnerships with ISVs and software solutions vendors are increasingly important for hardware-only suppliers.
    • There are few major hardware differentiators left to exploit energy efficient and high durability/extended lifecycle terminals are in demand but in time these features will likely become more standardized.
  • End users report increasing interest in moving to hosted/cloud/SaaS based software solutions, particularly as concerns surrounding data security are assuaged. Such software architecture is seen as having several key benefits:
    • Increased visibility into enterprise data as well as centralized accessibility to this information.
    • Reduced integration difficulties/complexities, and easier maintenance.
    • Lower total cost of ownership.
  • Modularity the ability to selectively choose POS software functionality is another key feature many end users are looking for in their software solution.
    • Such architecture enables the end user to invest only in the functionalitythey require, while augmenting their core software with proprietary programs and other third party applications.
    • Examples of modular software solutions include Radiant Systems' Aloha and PARtech's EverServ, both targeted to hospitality users.

Market Segmentation, Estimates & Forecasts

The Americas remains the largest regional market; EMEA leading growth opportunities

Regional Demand for POS Terminals & Workstations

  • The Americas accounted for over 40% of global demand for POS Terminals & Workstations in 2010. Demand for POS solutions remains significantly diminished relative to pre-recessionary levels, but near to mid term opportunities exist as enterprises consider extending and augmenting their installed base. Compelling growth opportunities remain in emerging country markets throughout Latin America.
  • EMEA regional demand remains nearly 29% lower relative to pre-recessionary levels. Growth in the region will outpace the Americas and APAC, as retailers in emerging country markets invest in traditional P08 delivery platforms.
  • In APAC, ongoing economic development in certain emerging country markets, particularly those with large populations such as China and India, drove 2010 year-over-year growth to over 39%. Continuing development in the region is expected to drive steady, mid-single digit growth throughout the forecast period.
