In 2016, the global copper mine (ore) metal content in the ore production reached 20.2 mt - up by 5.7% compared with 2015 - supported by an increase in production from Peru (38.4%), Mexico, Indonesia (25.7%), and Zambia. The commencement of the Las Bambas Project in Peru was the primary factor behind the significant increase in the country's copper output. During the same period, copper production remained moderate across China, United States, and Australia, while declining in Chile (3.8%) and Brazil.

Global copper reserves totaled 720 million tonnes (mt) as of January 2017. Chile dominating with 210 mt or 29.2% of the total followed by Australia with 89 mt, Peru with 11.3%, Mexico with 6.4% and United States with 35 mt.

Key highlights include in this report -

  • Copper is available in different forms, including sulfide deposits, carbonate deposits and silicate deposits. Porphyry copper deposits are the main source of copper, and approximately 60% of the world's copper is sourced from these deposits, followed by sediment-hosted stratabound deposits with 20%.
  • In 2016, global copper mine or metal content in the ore production increased by 5.7% over 2015 mainly as a result of supply increased from Peru (38.4%), Mexico, and Indonesia. Chile, Peru, China, United States and Australia were the top five largest producers of copper globally accounted for 60% of global total in 2016.
  • With upcoming copper projects in Mexico, Australia, Canada, China, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Zambia, and an anticipated rise in capacity utilization at existing mines, global copper mine production is expected to grow to reach 22.8 mt in 2021.
  • Global copper consumption was 23.4 mt in 2016 up by a nominal 1.7% over 2015 - owing to higher demand from China's construction sector. Consumption also increased by 4% in Europe owing to higher demand from Germany and Russia, while consumption declined by 1% in the US.
  • Peru, Chile, and Indonesia were the top three exporters of copper ores and concentrates. Chile China, Japan, and Spain were the three largest importers
  • CorporacionNacionaldelCobre de Chile (Codelco), Freeport-McMoRan Inc, BHP Billiton Ltd, Glencoreplc, Anglo America plc, and Grupo Mexico S.A.B. de C.V. (Grupo Mexico) are the world's six biggest producers.
