With the support of the government and capital investment, China has become the major LED chip production base. A large number of enterprises from China introduce technical personnel from Taiwan, Japan, Korea or America. They gradually shorten the gap of overall technical level between Chinese enterprises and international ones.
Apart from being the large OEM nation of LED application, China has achieved development in LED chip and LED package fields following years of development and it has become the major production base worldwide. Thereby, besides that many international lighting brands seek OEM manufacturers in China, relevant companies in midstream and upstream follow suit. At least, market scale of Chinese LED chip and package increases apparently and the production capacity of Chinese manufacturers continues expanding.
In 2018, the new capacity increased in 2017 kept releasing. In addition, due to the China's trade conflict and market demand below expectations, LED chip capacity was surplus and market price dropped sharply. The year-round capacity grew by 30% YoY, but market scale only rose by 3.5%. In 2019, new capacity of 1.4 million pcs/M (converted into two inch) is expected to be expanded as planned, and those increased in 2018 have gradually released. In this connection, the situation of supply exceeding demand hardly improve in the short run. Also, market price and the profitability of manufacturers will continue to decline.

And Mini/Micro LED, UV LED and automotive LED will become the major driving forces in the next few years.
In 2018, Chinese lighting LED market scale reached RMB 34.5 billion. It remained in an uptrend in spite of the US-China trade conflict. But according to China Association of Lighting Industry, total export of Chinese LED lighting still saw an increase of 4% in 2018, standing at USD 32.4 billion. As export and domestic demand remained growth, lighting LED market demand continued to grow. In the next few years, due to the trade conflicts and relatively higher penetration ratio of LED lighting, it is estimated that the CAGR during 2018to2023 will be only 3%.
In recent years, the spread of xEV has been speeding up and the penetration ratio of traditional automotive LED lighting has escalated. In addition, the acceptance of AM LED lighting has improved rapidly. Therefore, automotive lighting market will maintain fast growth in the next few years. Its market scale is expected to come to RMB 8.9 billion in 2023 with a CAGR of 12%.
In 2019, manufacturers have successively launched display products smaller than P1.0. In future years, the pixel pitch of display is very likely to get smaller and more LED display application fields will be developed like cinema and meeting rooms. The increases in application fields and LED usage volume per unit area will boost the growth of display LED market scale. It is estimated that the CAGR will hit 6% during 2018 to 2023.
In late 2018, Taiwan and international manufacturers introduced Mini LED products in succession. Mainland Chinese manufacturers also announced that they will achieve mass production of Mini LED in 2019. Driven by the continuous cost reduction, Mini/Micro LEDmarket demands will keep booming in the years to come. However, due to higher technical threshold, international and Taiwan markets are expected to achieve mass production while Chinese market will make it later.
UV-A LED products have gained market recognition in industrial curing field. As product stability improves, UV-A market size will expand step by step. Regarding UV-C LED field, currently international manufacturers still dominate UV-C market and the price of UV-C products remains at a higher level. But price is expected to decline due to the involvement of Chinese manufacturers. Minamata Convention on Mercury will take effect in 2020 and consumer products with mercury will be banned on distribution. In addition, household appliance manufacturers will energetically develop products relevant to UV-C sterilization. It is learned that household appliance giants are rush to apply UV-C products to their products, which contributes to the soaring growth of UV-C market.
