Abstract

INTRODUCTION

A unique analysis and database of households with electricity by region and country, providing insights to the future of global electrical industries.

This report introduces and provides an overview of a unique new database created by StatPlan, Household Electrification Trends, 1900 to 2050. We believe that there is no other similar database.

Electrification is something we take for granted in the developed world and hardly ever think about it. However, there are large areas of the world where the level of electrification is still low and many people live without electric power. In the developed countries, up to about twenty years ago marketers thought simply in terms of 100% of homes having electricity; the numbers would increase in line with population and these statistics provided a prediction of growth. However, this is a simplistic view and it ignores three basic trends which are altering the marketing landscape irrevocably and when combined demonstrate a new picture for the future. These are population growth or decline, the decrease in household size in many parts of the world and the rate of electrification of the world.
