Every vehicle, at some point during its delivery from the manufacturing facility to the dealer or customer, is transported by road on what is known as an automobile transporter, car carrier or car hauler. Car carrier trailers can be open or enclosed. Most commercial trailers have built-in ramps for loading and off-loading cars, as well as power hydraulics to raise and lower ramps for stand-alone accessibility.
In this report STN presents data and information on trailers which can transport three or more cars. Car carriers have been classified into four categories-open three- to four-car carrier trailers, open five- to six-car carrier trailers, open seven- to eight-car carrier trailers and enclosed car carriers.
The manufacture of car carrier trailers is a small industry, both in terms of the number of units manufactured and the number of industry participants. STN has identified 16 manufacturers of over-the-road automotive car carriers, divided into three distinct types of manufacturers: smaller car carrier trailer manufacturers producing wedge or gooseneck models; large car carrier manufacturers, such as Cottrell and Delavan, that offer models which can carry up to 12 cars; and enclosed car carrier manufacturers, which are distinct from open car carrier manufacturers. Most enclosed car carrier manufacturers are dry-van and/or other utility trailer manufacturers. Only two companies, Cottrell and Featherlite, produce both open and enclosed carriers.
STN has presented estimates of production numbers and market shares, an overview of the broad competitive picture, demand outlook for the industry, and brief profiles of each manufacturer.
These and other topics are the subject of this report from SpecialtyTransportation.net (“STN”). The report can be put to immediate use for sales and market planning, M&A identification, competitive share analysis, alliances and technology transfer considerations.
