As climate change and environment issues become on the rise, even china and the U.S. as world's largest emitters of greenhouse gases started to limit greenhouse gas emissions. With changes in government policies and decreasing prices, the deployment of renewable energy technologies has been accelerated. The International Energy Agency recently announced that renewable energy sources accounted for 45% of newly installed capacity (140GW) for 2014. On the contrary, fossil fuels which accounted for 67.7% of electricity generated (based on statistics for 2012) is projected to see a gradual decrease in their shares.
Solar and wind power as the most common renewable energy sources see an increase in installed capacity due to a rapid decrease in electricity generation costs. The lowest solar power bid was reported to be 58 cents/kWh; and power wind, 47 cents/ kWh. Penetration of renewable energy shows faster-than-expected growth.
Newly installed solar PV capacity through 2014 totaled 177.8GW. SNE Research projects that about 54.8GW will be added with growing demand from existing markets such as China, the U.S. and Japan and emerging markets including the U.K., India and Chile. As the U.S. and Japan decided to cut down government spending, which has driven the growth of the PV market, the market is projected to grow but slowly and newly installed capacity will be 83.9GW by 2020.
