Report Definitions & Specifications

For this analysis, the point-to-point microwave market includes carrier class ATM/TDM/IP/Ethernet systems that operate with dedicated links. Services and channel revenue are not included, only manufacturer equipment revenue is included. The microwave radio market is segmented by capacities, transmission protocols, and architecture schemes. The definitions for each are below.

Segmented by Capacities:

  • Low Capacity Systems:
    Low capacity radios include native PDH or SDH radios that are sold with less capacity than 155 Mbps. Thus, a 16 x E1/T1 would be in this category. For native Ethernet radios, medium capacity is 50- 99 Mbps and low capacity is under 50 Mbps.
  • High Capacity Systems:
    High capacity radios include SDH radios that are sold with the ability to run at 155 Mbps or greater or Ethernet radios that are sold with the ability to run at 100 Mbps to 399 Mbps.
  • Ultra High Capacity Systems:
    Ultra high capacity radios include radios that are sold with the ability to run at 400 Mbps and higher. This includes radios in the millimeter transmission bands (60-90 GHz) and those with advanced modulation schemes delivering ultra high capacities.

Segmented by Transmission Protocols:

Traffic is carried over the air by either TDM or Ethernet protocols. There are three types of radios that carry these protocols:

  • 1. TDM Radios:
    TDM radios use TDM as its only native radio transmission protocol. The radio uses either PDH or SDH/SONET as its native transmission protocol. Ethernet can be transmitted over SDH/SONET. These radios are used extensively for carrying voice traffic and can be used in either short haul or long haul configurations. Capacity ranges from very low (2 x E1/T1) to over 150 Mbps.

Sky Light Research Methodology:

The data contained in this report is measured by commercial unit shipments and manufacturer revenue. Manufacturing revenue does not take into account added margins when sold through indirect sales channels. In addition, neither service revenue nor revenue realized from products OEM'd from another vendor are considered.

Shipment information is gathered and scrutinized via surveying and talking with radio manufacturers, operators, integrators, and component partners every 90 days. The gathered statistics are verified against the following:

  • SEC documents and other public financial data.
  • Formal comments made on quarterly earnings calls by company executives, including commentary in the Q&A.
  • Conference calls with company representatives to verify accuracy of data and provide further clarity on data
  • Comparing vendor performance with competitors and overall market performance.
  • Comparing vendor's shipments against historical quarter-to-quarter trends for the company.
  • Regional spectrum allocations.
  • Conference calls with operators, service providers, VC's, investment analysts, and component and integration partners.
  • Manufacturers and operators press releases and other formal public announcements.

From the above information, Sky Light Research builds detailed product models for each company. These models feed into the quarterly model, which breaks down the market into various segments. By looking at the market at a very detailed level, Sky Light Research is well equipped to spot discrepancies that may arise in vendor models.

Forecasting is completed through statistical analysis and a “bottoms up” approach. The annual forecasts are based on the quarterly forecasts, licensing opportunities, historical trends, and competing technologies. In addition, comments from operators, component manufacturers, and radio manufacturers are built into the forecast model.
