Starch and starch product manufacturing refers to the production of starch and starch product using corn, potatoes, beans and other plant raw materials. It also includes production of sugar product through enzymic method or acid method using starch as raw material.

Starch is manufactured by soaking and milling corn, grain sorghum, wheat, potato, sweet potato or cassava in order to isolate and remove non-starch substances such as protein, fat, cellulose, etc. When manufacturing starch with corn, the isolated protein, corn oil and other non-starch substances boasts higher value, and therefore the corn starch industry develops swiftly. The emergence of the technology to isolate starch sugar and starch derivatives through deep starch processing has expanded the applications of starch, thus contributing to the transformation from starch processing to large-scale industrial production.

Year 2015 saw thrills of the starch industry in China. In 2015, China entered into the economic new normal of structure adjustment and steady growth and the excessive growth industries of over capacity were all faced with reform and challenge. So did the starch industry.

Stop production was absolutely the key word for Chinese starch industry in 2015. Under the industry situation of overall deficit, the enterprises stopped production to decrease loss and seek for copartners actively for transformation.

In 2008, China started the temporary storage purchase of corn. The promulgation of temporary storage policy initiated active roles in corn planting to a large extent, but also brought severe shock to China's corn market. The continuous rise of temporary storage corn prices made the corn prices rise in successive years and diverge from the fundamental market operation law. Thus the corn industry of China fell ill with "three high" of high yield, high stock and high import and brought huge economic burden to the country and overburdened cost pressure to the starch producers. Prior to the marketing of new grain in 2015, the corn price in China was higher by RMB 1000 Yuan/ton than that abroad. So excessive cost resulted in China's starch products losing the competitive power in the international market.

The slump of starch industry started to unfold in 2014. The consumer market got worse; there was a huge overcapacity; the raw materials cost remained high and the high cost failed to transfer to the products with the product prices fluctuating at low level; the producers were on the brink of deficit; and the rate of operation and the profit margin fell to the record low.

In the year, the production scale of starch slowed down greatly and the output of corn starch, starch sugar, modified starch and sugar alcohol all declined. Many starch enterprises suspended or partially suspended production due to failure of fund withdrawal and capital chain rupture; the business operation got hard increasingly and some enterprises disappeared in the industry; the industrial integration began to take shape.

In 2015, in front of more than 80 million tons temporary storage purchase volume, 1500 tons carry-over stock and 5 million tons temporary storage auction sales volume, the temporary storage prices declined eventually, which, together with the production subsidy for deep processing enterprises, brought the light of hope to the corn starch producers. With the hope from cost reduction, the corn deep processing industry began to enjoy the more favorable environment for market development..
