Extract from this report

  • Production of fibreglass insulation in the country started to speed up in 1995, when the Uralita Group put its factory in Chudovo (in the Novgorod Province), which had previously undergone extensive modernisation, into operation.
  • The Central Federal District is responsible for almost half of the rock and slag wool products manufactured in the country, largely because of the proximity of the production units to the major consumer: the Moscow area.
  • It is estimated that consumption of XPS in Russia increased by 33% year on year in 2013, following a 19% increase a year earlier. At the same time, consumption of EPS rose by only 7.6% in 2012, and was followed by a more modest, 1.7%, increase in 2013.

Market commentary by expert

The fact that it is a good material characterised by better sound-insulation and fire-resistance properties appears to be more significant to customers than the pricing factor, making slag and rock wool the most popular thermal insulation material in Russia. Between 2011 and 2013, annual production of most thermal insulation products boasted double-figure growth rates, which mostly reflected solid expansion in residential and non-residential construction activity in the country. However, rock and slag wool as a thermal insulation material has fallen in popularity over the last two years, largely due to the fact that it is more expensive and difficult to work with and over a period of weak economic growth customers tend to increase consumption of cheaper products.

In 2015, consumption of thermal insulation products is likely to be reduced considerably. The reduction will principally reflect waning residential construction activity and a deterioration in the purchasing power of the population. It is predicted that housing completion will decline by more than 5% in 2015, and that real disposable income will contract by 3-4%. The sharp depreciation of the rouble will not have a strong negative effect on the consumption of thermal insulation products in Russia, mostly because of the less substantial share of imports (less than 5%). Furthermore, the decline in imports will be off-set in part by domestic production.
