  • Individual stores, which represent the third largest sales channel of children's products, have been slowly declining in importance, and have been replaced by other distribution channels, chiefly chain stores, large format stores and the internet.
  • In recent years children's retailers have started focusing on the regions by expanding their network in "million-cities", however the priority market is still Moscow and Moscow Province, followed by St. Petersburg.

Market commentary by expert

The children's products market in Russia is one of the fastest growing sectors of the Russian retail industry and has a considerable potential. There is still much room for new market entrants, particularly in the footwear and toys segments.

PMR forecasts further growth of the market, however, with lower dynamics than in the previous years. The industry will be positively affected by a rising birth rate and the family-oriented government policy. Also parents' awareness is increasing. They opt for high quality products for their children and avoid unverified goods. Thus, they spend more on their children, despite the fact that family incomes are not following in step with the market growth.

On the other hand, the Russian children's market may be hampered by the current unfavourable economic conditions. In addition to these difficulties, the recent political and economic sanctions have had an impact. The Russian rouble has depreciated greatly against the most important sourcing currencies, which may affect the import-dependent children's industry.
