Did you know?

  • The pace of recovery for the non-residential construction market in Bulgaria is weak and seems to be determined by developments mostly in industrial and warehouse construction.
  • In 2015, the retail and hospitality construction segments will lead in terms of growth rates in Romania.
  • Investor activity in the Polish office market surged in 2014 as the investors secured permits to build office buildings with the combined usable floor area of more than 1.5 million m2, outperforming the previous record of 2008.
  • More than 80,000 m2 of modern retail space were completed in the Czech Republic in 2014, the lowest figure since 2011.
  • Most of the activity in the Slovak office construction is concentrated in the Bratislava area. Any developments in regional cities are independent acts.

Extract from this report

  • One area which is dragging the Hungarian non-residential construction down is retail construction, as the government has given clear indications that it will clamp down on investments by large international retail chains in its move to support local shops and suppliers. The ban on large malls was renewed in late 2014.
  • In 2014 Romanian investors secured the highest number of non-residential construction permits in three years. Last year, permits were issued for the construction of 7,802 buildings, which was 10% more than the result achieved in 2013, when 7,088 permits were issued.

Market commentary by expert

“Apart from the new investments, the year 2014 saw, as predicted, the resumption of several construction projects which have been in the pipeline for years and not finished. This has helped construction output from non-residential projects to fall less dramatically than predicted in 2014. A maturing of the overall non-residential construction market is evident, although with a different scale of maturity in different segments of the non-residential market. This is the main reason why smaller scale projects suited to the most popular type of property will dominate the development of speculative office and retail space.” Bartlomiej Sosna, Head Construction Market Analyst.
