Market commentary by expert

“Until 2012, the construction industry had been one of the key drivers of the Russian economy. Strong growth rates in construction had been largely achieved on the back of state supported infrastructure development programmes. However, this trend changed in 2012, when the construction industry expanded year on year less than the country's GDP: 2.4% against 3.4%, respectively, and the downward trend continued in 2013, when the industry contracted by 1.5%. Less impressive growth in construction is mostly due to a reduction in spending on civil engineering projects. The strong growth in residential and non-residential construction in Russia has provided decisive support for the expansion of the construction chemicals market. Based on market shares obtained from the surveyed contractors and on the actual consumption of thick-coat plaster per finished square meter in the construction of new residential projects, which uses the bulk of these products, we estimate that in 2013 the total size of the thick-coat plaster market increased by 2% to about 118 million m2. The expansion rate has eased mostly due to a more dynamic increase in consumption of cement-based plaster, which requires more material per square meter. This year's survey showed a continued rise in the share of gypsum-based solutions.” Vitalie Iambla, Construction Market Analyst.
