The global energy business faces unprecedented challenges-and opportunities-as distributed energy resources (DER) proliferate. This emerging paradigm shift in power generation and grid operations has also brought about the threat of grid instability and complicated grid management processes for utilities. To date, utility efforts have been largely reactive, focused on issues caused by renewables intermittency, shifting loads, capacity constraints, and bidirectional power flows. In order to adequately mitigate these effects and enable DER integration, pervasive visibility into the network is needed. Meanwhile, third-party DER owners must also pursue communications capabilities to optimize system performance and deliver the maximum benefits to end customers.

Utilities and third-party DER owners have ramped up investments in asset connectivity and networking for improved operating economics, energy efficiency, and grid reliability. Control and communications at the DER level will enable the development of markets for aggregated clean resources and services, service-oriented business models, and integrated grid management strategies.
