The use of digital protective relay technologies is changing and advancing the management and control of transmission and distribution (T&D) grids. Widely deployed supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems collect grid status data at 4- to 5-second intervals; unfortunately, this is too infrequent to reveal many of the disturbances that cause protective relays to trip.
