Electric forklifts are capturing an increasing share of the materials handling market in North America. While lead-acid batteries are a mature and well-entrenched technology in this market, they do have limitations that are spurring interest in alternative electric technologies. These limitations relate to the length of charge time, runtime, and low cycle life. In addition, the need for spare lead-acid batteries and warehouse space and the labor hours devoted to charging and battery management result in high costs.

These costs provide an opportunity for advanced electric technologies for forklifts that may have higher upfront prices, but can reduce operating costs with longer runtime and reduced fueling. Fuel cells (both polymer electrolyte membrane and direct methanol), fast chargers, lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries, and ultracapacitors are all being offered as technology solutions to the drawbacks of lead-acid batteries. Distribution centers run by companies such as Walmart and Sysco, as well as companies with plants requiring indoor forklifts, are adopting new technology for forklifts. Navigant Research forecasts that revenue from fuel cells, fast chargers, and Li-ion batteries in the North American forklift market will reach $556 million by 2020, up from $121 million in 2013.

This Navigant Research report analyzes the market opportunity for polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells, direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs), fast chargers, Li-ion batteries, and ultracapacitors for the North American forklift market. The report discusses the drivers for this market and the types of warehouse operations where the new technologies provide a good return on investment. Forecasts for electric forklift sales by technology and revenue from new electric technologies in forklifts in North America extend through 2020. The report also reviews the key challenges for each technology in further penetrating the market and provides brief profiles of key industry players.

Key Questions Addressed:

  • What is driving interest in alternatives to lead-acid batteries for electric forklifts in North America?
  • What are the key market conditions where an alternative electric technology for forklifts might succeed?
  • How likely are Li-ion batteries to see uptake in the North American forklift market?
  • How much more market share are fuel cells likely to gain in this market?
  • How much penetration will fast chargers see in the North American forklift market?
