The movement of people and goods by vehicle, ship, and airplane continues to contribute to rising congestion and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions around the world. Limited options for intercity travel are restricting economic growth and regional mobility. High speed ground transport (HSGT) technologies such as high speed rail (HSR), magnetic levitation (maglev) trains, and hyperloops can link cities into economic megaregions while simultaneously helping to transform the transportation system to become more sustainable.

The proliferation of HSR has provided an economic boost and reduced short-haul air traffic across much of Europe and several countries in Asia Pacific, such as Japan and China. Maglev trains and hyperloops could extend these trends much further. However, maglev costs will need to be significantly reduced, and hyperloops will have to overcome a myriad of technological, safety, regulatory, and business model challenges to become a viable mass transport technology.

This Navigant Research report examines the evolving landscape of HSGT technologies and their viability for mainstream adoption. The study provides an overview of recent deployments and examines the impact of HSGT technologies on various industries (e.g., aviation, oil & gas, etc.). The report discusses future growth potential and examines the benefits that result from successful HSGT implementation. Recommendations are provided to cities and technology vendors to capitalize on the growth of HSGT technologies.

Key Questions Addressed:

  • What is the current state of HSGT technologies, and what are their relative strengths and weaknesses?
  • How do HSGT technologies differ in terms of their market penetration and long-term potential?
  • What will the impacts of HSGT be on the broader transportation ecosystem and related industries?
  • What should HSR vendors do to protect against potential future losses to hyperloops and maglev trains?
  • What should airlines and oil companies do to offset their losses from HSGT?
  • How can hyperloop vendors be most successful?
  • How should governments support the development of HSGT?

Who Needs This Report:

  • Government agencies
  • City and regional transportation managers
  • Hyperloop and maglev suppliers
  • HSR companies
  • Airline companies
  • Communication equipment and infrastructure providers
  • Telecoms
  • Engineering service providers and IT players
  • Investor community
