Africa Biofertilizers Market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.6% during the forecast period (2019 - 2024). In East African countries, including Kenya, Sudan, Uganda, and Tanzania, low demand due to lack of awareness and understanding of biofertilizers has resulted in the poor development of the biofertilizers sector. Despite the potential of biofertilizers, rapid market growth remains a challenge in eastern Africa, not only because of the high cost of production but also due to limited demand.
Biofertilizers are defined as substances comprising living microbes, which when applied to seed, plant, and soil stimulate growth by the supply of essential nutrients, such as N, P, and other mineral nutrients. Moreover, inoculants that provide nutrients to the plants are considered as biofertilizers in this study.
Need for Improving Soil Organic Matter
Over the past few years, conventional farming practices were being extensively carried out in agriculture, which made use of synthetic fertilizers for providing essential plant nutrients to the soil. An overuse of these fertilizers destroyed the soil, by rescinding the soil of its essential nutrients and thereby causing degradation of the soil. Hence, in order to improve the quality of soil, there is a need to make use of an alternative method, such as using biofertilizers, which can help in improving the quality of the soil, without depriving it of the essential nutrients. Using biofertilizers also helps in scaling up the nutrient intake of plants, which is also essential to the current scenario. Biofertilizers, such as Rhizobium, Azospirillum, and Phosphobacteria deliver nitrogen and phosphorous nutrients to crop plants through nitrogen fixation and phosphorous solubilization processes. These biofertilizers are utilized for rice, pulses, millets, cotton, sugarcane, and other horticulture crops. Since biofertilizers are capable of boosting the soil organic matter, it is considered to be one of the most important components of soil management, in the current paradigm.
South Africa Dominates the Biofertilizer Market in terms of Revenue
The South African biofertilizers market was valued at USD 29.3 million and was accounted for 65% of revenue for African biofertilizers market in 2017. Despite the ability of biofertilizers to sustainably increase the yields, along with significant economic benefit, they are not widely available to and also not adopted by smallholder farmers in South Africa. This further leads to the growing need for increased investments in localized research, the involvement of private and public sectors in the production of biofertilizers, establishment of effective regulations, and promotion of a favorable environment for the growth of the biofertilizers market in the country.
Africa biofertilizer market is highly fragmented, with top five market players accounting for about 20% of the market, while other companies account for the remaining share. The global biofertilizer market being unregulated is the reason why there are many small companies in the market. Once proper regulations are put in place, it is highly likely that the market will be consolidated among a few companies.
