Unmanned Marine Vehicles have a large number of applications in marine geoscience, and have been increasingly used in the policy sectors, commercial, military, and scientific. The ability of vehicles such as Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV) and Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUV) to operate independently makes them better suited to exploration of extreme environments from the world's deepest hydrothermal vents to polar ice sheets. AUVs have been deployed in a wide variety of marine geoscience studies, originally focused on seafloor mapping but more recently expanding into water column geochemical and oceanographic measurements. IFREMER L'Epaulard AUV is the first AUV, used in the early 1980s, specifically deployed for marine geoscience was used to map deep-sea manganese nodule fields.

Defense Industry is Expected to Be One of the Primary Recipients of the Technology

Many companies, such as ASV global have been designing Unmanned and Autonomous Marine systems for defense purposes. Halcyon unmanned surface vehicle has been built for Thales by ASV Global for Maritime Mine Counter Measures programme (MMCM). High utility for the existing systems have been found when integrated with each other. USVs and UUVs when integrated have high utility to be part of systems, such as Long-term Mine Reconnaissance System, Expendable Mobile Antisubmarine Warfare Training Target System, such as Mk 39. Europe Expected to Witness a High Usage of Unmanned Marine Vehicles

United Kingdom's Ministry of Defense (MoD) signed an agreement with ASV Global, which allows the company to utilize the advances Unmanned Surface Vehicle Capabilities. The Defense Science and Technology Laboratory has been working on an Advanced USV capability project which is further expected to grow the adoption of USVs in the defense sector, driving the development of autonomous navigation systems for USV's to operate at a variety of speeds. Furthermore, the UK Ministry of Defense negotiated a deal wherein it is set to spend GBP 17 million on a fleet of sea drones on a contractual basis with French arms giant Thales. The development of drones will be carried out by the MoD's French counterpart, the Direction Generale de l'Armement (DGA). According to MoD the vehicles will be primarily used for mine clearance. This initiative aspires to increase two kinds of unmanned maritime vehicle: a submarine and a surface craft, which are expected to meet the operational criteria of both the nations namely France and England
