The aircraft synthetic vision systems market is anticipated to register a CAGR of 6.55% over the forecast period 2018 - 2023. Synthetic Vision System provides pilots with clear and intuitive means of understanding their flying environment by delivering a new piloting interface by replacing conventional sky and ground depiction on the Primary Flight Display (PFD) with a 3D representation of the external surroundings.

Developments in the Product Range

As synthetic vision systems (SVS) become more mainstream, technology providers are refining their products to appeal to a broader range of customers. Along with general and business aviation operators, key targets include the rotorcraft and commercial transport markets. For the latter, however, the technology's main asset situational awareness will need to be bolstered by the potential for economic returns gained mainly through operational credit for using Synthetic Vision System.

The chief selling point for SVS, which delivers real-time, colour 3-D imagery of the terrain outside the aircraft to the pilot, is situational awareness. The system can identify critical threats, such as towers and mountains, and can show pilots traffic that is in front of them using data from Mode S data link or an active on-board traffic system. Pilots can use features familiar to many of the systems, such as the flight path marker and airport runway diagrams, to ensure a "safe approach and arrival.

Gulfstream in 2001 became the first civilian aircraft manufacturer to develop and earn certification for Enhanced Flight Vision System (EVS) on its flight decks. A cooling system surrounds Gulfstream EVS that better enables the infrared receivers to detect the slightest variations in infrared light emitted from runway lights, airports and even vehicles on the ground.

Increasing Research and Development Investments

For over a decade, NASA has been at the forefront of the SVS research program, with participation from institutions such as Avionics Engineering Center for Synthetic Vision Research, NASA's Langley Research Center, researchers from FAA and DOD, and several industry teams. Several major vendors, such as Honeywell, Rockwell Collins, and Cobham are also involved in the effort to design and develop the new and improved systems.

New product developments by Rockwell Collins such as the Pro Line 21 Synthetic Vision System helps equip the flight crew for situational awareness in low visibility and unfamiliar territory. With a simple menu selection, the synthetic image replaces the sky and ground depiction of the Attitude Director Indicator (ADI) on the PFD and dynamically changes based on current aircraft position, to give the pilot better situational awareness of the surrounding terrain and environment. The menus provide simple access to egocentric synthetic flight-deck view features such as on/off control, flight path vector, and day/night controls along with Multi-Function Display (MFD) exocentric (bird's eye) view. Pro-Line 21 SVS brings a new level of simplicity and operational efficiency to the flight deck by enhancing operations in low visibility with synthetic terrain images displayed on the screen.

Key Developments in the Market:

November 2017: NASA and Boeing have announced collaboration in order to test and certify synthetic vision systems as a part of a research programme which is aimed at enhancing the flight training as well as aviation safety.

October 2017: Esterline Avionics Systems have announced that they have been selected by Honeywell Aerospace in order to supply the Synthetic Vision System Primary Flight Display (SVS PFD) for Honeywell's Primus Elite 875/885 upgrade with advanced features.
