As the bio-based materials and chemicals industry builds capacity, the spotlight turns to which downstream applications will accept bio-based. This report provides insight into which downstream markets are poised for the adoption of bio-based materials and chemicals through analysis of the ever-expanding field of bio-based specialty chemicals. We analyze today's current application development for each company in our database to determine the target end-use markets and the top application areas. What we find is that just as today's specialty chemical industry contains significant diveristy, so does the bio-based specialty chemical industry. This results in distinct microlandscapes within the broader field of bio-based specialty chemicals. To understand, navigate, and succeed in today's bio-based specialty chemical landscape, these microlandscapes need individual analysis to understand what opportunities do - and do not - exist. Here we examine three microlandscapes: personal care and cosmetics; paints, coatings, and adhesives; and lubricants.
Application areas within bio-based specialty chemicals offer insight into the downstream demand potential for bio-based materials and chemicals.
The microlandscapes within the bio-based chemical space each have characteristically different opportunity spaces, and engagement opportunities vary widely by sector.
