Double-digit revenue growth has attracted companies investors into the market for the testing of cells and tissues, according to Kalorama Information's report. Molecular approaches have improved testing for genetic and protein markers in tissues and cells respectively. In situ hybridization and more specifically fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) techniques use DNA probes to detect pathogens and molecular structures in cells. More recently flow cytometry techniques and other cell capture devices allow lab professionals to select targeted cells that can be further analyzed with PCR, sequencing and mass spectrometry.

The result so far has been gene patterns that help distinguish cell and tumor attributes that demonstrate the presence of disease as well as risk for disease progression and sensitivity to specific therapeutics. A growing population of cancer patients has increased the number of histology analyses performed.

Further, developments in cytology and cervical cancer diagnosis fuel a continuous stream of innovation. For at least the past twenty years molecular analysis of tissue biopsies involves some form of in situ hybridization. Bit by bit, PCR, other amplification technologies and sequencing techniques are making their way into routine tissue analysis, especially for difficult to manage cases.

This report focuses on molecular histology and cytology approaches to testing, and the market for these technologies. The tests are used primarily to test biopsied tissue for cancer; cervical fluid for sexually transmitted diseases and HPV; and circulating tumor cells. Markets covered in this report include:
