About Piezoelectric Smart Materials

Smart materials are specialty building materials whose properties change when subject to external stimuli such as stress, temperature, moisture, pH, or magnetic field. The change in the smart materials is an inherent property and not due to an external force. Smart materials have been on the market for many years and serve a large number of end-use applications, including construction, transport, medical, and leisure. Smart materials can be classified as piezoelectric materials, shape memory alloys, magnetostrictive materials, thermoelectric materials, and rheological fluids.

Piezoelectric materials produce a voltage when mechanical stress is applied. This effect also appears in a reverse manner, i.e., producing a strain when an electric field is applied. Piezoelectric materials are widely used in sensors. These help in measuring fluid density, fluid viscosity, the force of impact, and fluid composition.
