About biopreservation

Biopreservation is the process of preserving the functionality and integrity of cells, tissues, and organs outside the native environment for extended storage time at different temperatures. In the US, vaccines save 3 million lives annually but because of inadequate storage and improper refrigeration, vaccines worth $20 million are wasted annually. Vaccines are of two types: live and inactivated. Based on their sensitivity and types, these vaccines are stored at different temperature. For example, inactivated vaccines are sensitive to excessive heat and freezing temperature; therefore, they are stored at 2°C to 8°C. Live vaccines such as varicella and MMRV are stored at -15°C. Similar to vaccines, biological specimens such as blood, plasma, and tumor cell lines need to be stored to remain functional. Preservation of biological samples is important as these samples are used for clinical, research, and commercial purposes.

The preservation of biosamples includes in-vitro culture, hypothermic storage, cryopreservation, and desiccation. The rising demand for storage has emerged the global biopreservation market.

Based on storage temperature, the market can be classified into five categories:

  • Room temperature (+20°C)
  • Refrigeration (+4°C)
  • Frozen (-20°C)
  • Ultra-low (-80°C)
  • Cryogenic (-196°C)
