Commercially, phytosterols are mainly isolated from two sources, from vegetable oils such as soybean oil, sunflower oil, rapeseed (canola) oil, or corn oil and from "tall oil," a byproduct of wood pulp manufacture. Each commercial source has its characteristic composition.
