About thermal energy storage

Thermal energy storage technology is mainly used for accumulating thermal energy by heating or cooling a storage medium. The energy stored is normally utilized for heating and cooling applications and also for generating power. These energy storage systems are generally small-scale systems and used commonly in buildings and industrial processes. There are three types of thermal energy storage systems: sensible heat storage system, latent heat storage system, and thermochemical storage system. The main advantage of thermal energy storage systems includes reduction in peak load demand, lowering of CO2 emissions, and improvement in the overall efficiency of the energy system. Nowadays, thermal energy storage systems are being constructed in combination with the concentrated solar plants in which the heat can be stored for power production during the absence of sunlight.
