Neurosurgery navigation, or neuronavigation, requires the use of computer-assisted technologies to guide or "navigate" neurosurgeons during cranial procedures. This type of surgery evolved from stereotactic surgery, which gained popularity during the 1940s. Stereotaxy was developed to better locate specific small targets within the patient using a three-dimensional coordinate system.

Unit sales growth is projected to continue increasing over the forecast period. This is due to new sales as navigation becomes increasingly used in tertiary and secondary hospitals.

Leading companies marketing navigation systems with neurosurgical applications are continuously developing brand new systems to try and entice facilities to replace their older systems. As navigation technologies become established across more procedures, facilities may opt to purchase on a lease or enter a fee per-use agreement. Future growth will depend on companies providing increasing versatility in terms of procedural applications for systems.

The release of Brainlab's Curve® in 2011 caused a noticeable increase in the ASP. However, it is projected to remain fairly stable. Downward pressure is exerted on the ASP by the presence of implant firms in the market who will bundle their systems with implant sales rather than selling them as stand-alone systems. Brainlab is the sole company in the market as of 2016 which sells navigation and surgical planning systems as its main product; as such, it maintains partnerships with several large surgical implant firms, including DePuy Synthes and Aesculap.
