The direct energy device market is separated into segments for monopolar electrodes, standard reusable bipolar devices, advanced disposable bipolar devices and electrosurgical generators. Ultrasonic Device Market

Direct energy bipolar devices directly emit energy in the form of voltage discharge, which is associated with heightened risks and can lead to injuries. Ultrasonic devices are supposed to alleviate these risks while performing similar functions. The ultrasonic device market is composed of reusable devices, reposable devices, and ultrasonic hardware. Reposable devices comprise a reusable component, usually the handle, and a disposable component, usually the tip that makes direct contact with the patients' tissue. This type of device offers the environmental benefits that come with using reusable devices along with the guaranteed sterility offered by disposable devices. Reposable ultrasonic devices will continue to outsell their reusable counterparts.

Ethicon's line of HARMONIC ACE® devices dominated the overall ultrasonic device market, outcompeting comparable products by Covidien and Olympus. Surgeons have divided opinions as to their preference for ultrasonic or bipolar direct energy.

Closure Device Market

The stapler segment has seen high single-digit growth in recent years due to high growth in bariatric procedure numbers. Stapling continues to be the preferred method of laparoscopic closure.**/i

The market for closure devices is divided into segments for staplers, endosuturing devices and clip appliers. The stapler segment is the largest, dominated by Ethicon and Covidien. These companies compete closely: the segment is split almost 50/50 between them.

Ethicon's line of ECHELON ENDOPATH® endocutters and staplers has been successful in this market and competes directly with Covidien's line of Endo GIA™ staplers. Endocutters are essentially staplers that have the added ability to cut at the same time, which increases their versatility in the operating room. The laparoscopic powered morcellator market experienced a massive decline of over 40% in response to controversy surrounding the safety of morcellation.**/i
